Together with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, HEMS is helping to prepare technologically proficient teachers with funding from the U.S. Department of Education’s Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology (PT3). This catalyst project is strengthening and connecting teacher preparation programs at six different universities (and their respective P/K-16 councils) through a web portal, mini-grants, rubric development, eportfolios, course redesign, summer technology camps, and innovative professional development. This project promotes the field-based model, which strengthens student teachers' experiences integrating technology with children in authentic classroom settings. As a result, we've included K-12 teachers (as well as pre-service teachers and university faculty) as a major target audience for all of our initiatives. The project website is http://www.pa-academy.org/pt3/portal/. (You may have to create a user id to view the site.)

HEMS' roles in the multi-year Pennsylvania PT3 project are grant writer and external evaluator. Specifically, we are assessing how this project impacts student teachers’ effective technology integration in their professional lives—for instance, using as up-to-date databases for real-time problem solving with students or accessing networked learning communities for professional support. A logic model developed by HEMS provides a snapshot of the needs, activities, and anticipated outcomes of the project.
